Irma Jean (Wessels) StorrIRMA JEAN (Wessels) STORR (1929-)
Wessels and the Dalai Lama

Born on a farm in Illinois, of Christian parents she made a decision for Christ at the age of eight. Attended prayer meetings for India at Bob Jones University during her training to be a teacher.

During a sermon, Dr. Bob Jones, founder of Bob Jones University, was speaking on Matt. 10:38-9, about taking up your cross and following Him. He then looked at Storr and said... "young lady your cross may be India."

After finishing school and graduate training, she joined T.E.A.M. and left for India as a single missionary teacher. In 1958, a year after she arrived, the Dalai Lama and thousands of his followers came to the same area. Two weeks later Storr had a private meeting with him and was asked to be involved in the education of the young people. She consequently established a four year occupational training school for teenage girls.

Upon completion of the first four years, the results were presented to the Dalai Lama who requested its continuance. During the second year of the next term, her visa was revoked, and no reason was given. The Government of India refused to renew her residential permit in spite of a petition with over 2,000 signatures circulated in Mussoorie requesting that she be allowed to stay.

Though disappointed the program was canceled, she returned to the U.S., became Mrs. David Storr and adopted a Tibetan son, with permission of the Dalai Lama. They continue to share the Gospel and express their love for Tibetans in practical ways.
